Embracing the Parallax: Berenice Abbott and Elizabeth McCausland

Through March 30
Heckscher Museum of Art

Photographer Berenice Abbott and art-critic Elizabeth McCausland were both lifelong romantic and intellectual partners. Their book Changing New York (1939) was not the book they had originally envisioned, as their publisher diluted their message in favor of the commercial interests of the time; Abbott’s photographs were dramatically reordered and McCausland’s overtly political text was almost completely rewritten. “Embracing the Parallax” is a restoration effort, the first show to ever highlight the original, unpublished captions written by McCausland, and show them as they were intended, alongside Abbott’s photography. The show, says Jessica Rosen, curatorial assistant at Hecksher, “highlights that queer people need to be shown in their wholeness, and not just the bits and pieces of them that are deemed acceptable.” For more information and museum hours, click here. The action in The Ruins brims with fascinating insight about the Nazis’ presence in the U.S. and the shifting cultural climate of the 1950s.” — Publishers Weekly. Seating for this class is limited and tickets are nonrefundable. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will go to The Peconic Land Trust, as chosen by the author.
