It was good for this district to have a few candidates looking to fill the trustee seats and actually have a campaign with choices. These volunteer positions require a tremendous amount of work. While I was hoping that Tammie Topel would have won one of the spots, I also voted for Victoria Buscareno and I'm thrilled she will continue to serve on the BOE. Carol Taylor has a lot of district experience and I believe she will bring a strong voice to the board.
It is a win for the Northport-East Northport community that the hostile board trustee that has been inappropriately using derogatory language, rude and hateful to not only community members, but his fellow trustees, is now leaving the board. It is difficult for our board to operate in a toxic work environment. Now I believe they will thrive.
It was disheartening to read today the divisive commentary of Trustee Thomas Loughran regarding the budget vote where he stated, "Make sure your voice is heard - because I am pretty sure the voices talking do not speak for you."
Who is "you"? We are one community with a common goal. We all want our children to have a wonderful education and experience. The continuous public commentary supporting this divide from members of our Board of Education needs to come to an end. They need to set an example and standard as elected officials. I would like to see some guidelines set in place on social media for both BOE trustees and all that are employed by this school district.
