Summer at the Northport Historical Society: A self-guided garden tour, harbor history and more

The Northport Historical Society and Museum recently announced a vibrant lineup of summer programs, anchored by the launch of a new rotating exhibit, “Legends of the Harbor,” curated by Elizabeth Abrahams Riordan. The exhibit, open now through August 31, explores Northport's long history as a thriving seaside village, inviting visitors to dive into the colorful history, myths and maritime legends of Northport Harbor.
But the adventure doesn’t stop there. Summer at the Society offers a season full of experiences designed to educate, entertain and connect the community:
Remembrance: A Self-Guided Garden Tour
Sunday, July 13, 12-4pm
Take a serene journey through private gardens in and around Northport. Each garden tells a story – some reflect family heritage, others serve as memorials, and all are infused with creativity and care. The day concludes with refreshments and raffles, offering a chance for community connection and shared inspiration. Rain or shine. This is a ticketed event.
The tour offers an eclectic mix of garden styles. Guests will see:
• An English-style parterre with David Austin roses and foxgloves
• A formal garden inspired by Charleston design with cast iron furniture and boxwood lined paths
• A peaceful woodland garden with family-heirloom elements like “Grandpa’s Rock”
• An apiary and organic pollinator landscape maintained by a professional designer
• Serene gardens around historic homes, including one dating back to 1740
• Naturalistic beds, native plantings, ponds and even a chicken coop guarded by “Bella the Guard Goose”
Pirate Adventures for Family Fun Night
Tuesday, July 15, 4:30-6:30pm (rain date July 22)
Join the museum for a pirate-themed adventure full of crafts, scavenger hunts and family-friendly fun. Come explore history through play and view the “Legends of the Harbor” exhibit before heading down to Northport Family Fun Night.
Historic Main Street Walking Tour
Sundays, July 20 and August 17, 1:30pm
Take a walk-through time with historian Dan Sheehan and hear tales of Jack Kerouac, local oyster barons, Prohibition escapades and the trolley that once ran through Northport. A must for history buffs and curious minds alike! This is a ticketed event.
Northport Farmers’ Market Booth
Saturday, August 9, 8am-12:30pm
Stop by the booth at the base of Main Street to learn more about the society, pick up merchandise, and chat with the team about upcoming programs and exhibits.
Still In Love Icon Award
Tuesday, August 12, 6pm
Join the Northport Historical Society and Museum at Northport Village Hall for the presentation of the Still In Love Icon Award, honoring the lasting impact of the “Still in Love” street art on Bayview Avenue. The beloved graffiti, which has been there for decades, symbolizes the deep, enduring affection that Northport residents hold for their town.
Children’s Pop-up Exhibit: What Northport Means to Me
Children of all ages are invited to contribute their own artwork that reflects what Northport means to them whether it’s the beauty of the harbor, the charm of Main Street or a favorite neighborhood memory. In collaboration with Sweet Arts, a proud business member of the Northport Historical Society and Museum, children can create their artwork at the Sweet Arts studio, located at 105 Main Street. The $20 entry fee includes all art materials. Finished pieces will be displayed at the museum August 13-17. Art submission deadline: August 10.
Historic Harbor Boat Tour
Thursday, August 21, departures at 6 and 7:15pm (rain date August 22)
Set sail from Seymour’s Boatyard for a cruise through Northport Harbor. Learn about the harbor's rich history followed by drinks and light fare. Tickets are limited and available on the historical society website.
