Northport Village officials provided the following notice in response to the winter storm watch in effect for the area; total snow accumulations could be between 8 and 18 inches.
The Village of Northport Highway Department stands ready in the face of the impending snowstorm. Crews will prioritize clearing our main roadways first, followed by secondary roads. Please avoid parking on our roadways.
The storm is expected to begin early Sunday morning, January 25, and last through Monday evening, January 26. Forecasters are warning of a significant storm that could be the largest in years, with the potential to shut down travel across Long Island.
PSEG is bringing in additional resources to restore power in a timely manner.
Expected Impacts
Most forecasts predict 8 to 12 inches of heavy snow. Some models suggest totals could reach up to 18 inches if the storm remains all snow without mixing.
Timeline
Saturday, January 24: Turning frigid with record low temperatures near 10°F; light snow may begin late in the day.
Sunday, January 25: Heavy snow and windy conditions throughout the day. Travel is expected to become difficult or impossible.
Monday, January 26: Snow continues, likely ending by Monday afternoon or evening.
Conditions
High winds and blustery conditions will likely lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility. A cold weather advisory is also in effect through Saturday morning due to wind chills in the single digits.
Preparation Resources
Residents are urged to stock up on necessities before the storm arrives on Sunday. Be prepared, check on generators, snow blowers, and other needed equipment. Please keep off the roadways to allow the Village’s highway department to clear roads. Again, if possible, do not park on roadways.
