Northport Village Mayor Damon McMullen released a statement today, August 26, that Cow Harbor Weekend is still on, despite an uptick in Covid-19 cases within Suffolk County. The mayor is encouraging everybody attending the event be vaccinated and wear a mask when in a crowded area.

“If you are vulnerable, please protect yourself and confer with your doctor to decide whether or not you should attend the Cow Harbor Day events,” Mayor McMullen noted.

In his statement, the mayor explained that he’s been meeting with the Cow Harbor Day Committee on a regular basis, along with representatives from the Northport Police Department and Northport Volunteer Fire Department, and Northport Village trustees.

“Based on all of the information provided and all of the safety precautions being instituted, I have decided, together with the Cow Harbor Committee, that the great Northport tradition of Cow Harbor Day will go forward.”

The Village will continue to monitor the Covid-19 numbers daily, McMullen said, and in the event that the percentage of positive cases on Long Island moves dramatically and significantly upward, will re-evaluate the situation.

The Cow Harbor Race will take place on Saturday, September 18, and is expected to include about 5,000 runners and “twice as many spectators,” according to the Great Cow Harbor Day Weekend website. The race is followed by activities on the dock and Village park, including a concert that begins at 8pm.

On Sunday, September 19, the parade down Main Street begins at noon, followed by the Cow Harbor festival that includes live music, sidewalk sales, arts and crafts vendors, games and rides.
