On Thursday, June 1, the Northport Native Garden Initiative (NNGI) presented an Eastern redbud tree to Northport Village Mayor Donna Koch for its use in front of Village Hall. The Eastern redbud is native to North America and smaller in size, reaching 25 to 30 feet in height, making it an ideal choice for the space it now occupies. Previously, a cherry blossom tree was there but had to be removed when it became infected with a fungus.

The NNGI board, which includes Northport residents and founders Nicole Tamaro, Matt Gorman and Sara Abbass as well as Eileen Gorman, Barbara Bolen and Jen Makaw, saw that the previous tree had been taken down and that it made for a good opportunity to collaborate with the Village and donate a native replacement. The redbud has beautiful fuchsia flowers that bloom in the early spring, Tamaro told the Journal while gathering outside Village Hall. It’s also an appropriate sidewalk tree, Tamaro said, because the root system won’t impact the pavement.

“I think it’s beautiful. It’s the perfect tree for this area,” Koch told NNGI board members and children of the families who came to witness the donation. “We have our Main Street project coming up and we hope to put more trees like this,” she added.

Koch said that moments like this one make her happy, as she looked at the children next to the small, newly implanted tree and pictured them watching it grow over time. “I look forward to the kids growing up and watching it grow. They’ll be 15 to 20 years old and remember the tree at this size,” Koch said.
