Mayoral race down to Koch and Sabia; candidates for trustee will run unopposed

The Northport Village election is set for March 18, with three open seats on the ballot: one for mayor and two for trustee, each carrying a four-year term. The seats currently held by Mayor Donna Koch, Deputy Mayor Meghan Dolan and Trustee Joseph Sabia will all be decided in the race.

Koch is running for reelection and will go head-to-head with Joseph Sabia after fellow Trustee Dave Weber announced at the last Northport Village Board of Trustees meeting that he was withdrawing from the mayoral race. Weber will remain as trustee for the next two years. 

Weber detailed his decision to drop out of the mayoral race at the February 3 Village board meeting: “This was not an easy choice,” he said. “I entered the race with sincere intentions and a strong belief that open dialogue and transparency must be the foundation of local government. Ultimately, I concluded that I could best serve residents by remaining focused on governance from my seat as a Village trustee.”

Koch announced her re-election bid in September 2025, during the Cow Harbor Day parade. She has served since March 2022, when she won her first mayoral election with 1,015 votes over Weber’s 799.

Her opponent Joseph Sabia has served as trustee since 2022, narrowly winning his seat by 10 votes over Jim Izzo. With his term ending in March, Sabia has opted to run for mayor rather than seek another term as trustee. If unsuccessful, his time on the board will conclude, for now.

Izzo is returning this election to run for trustee; he and Dr. Monica Zenyuh are running unopposed for the two available trustee seats. Current Trustee Meghan Dolan has chosen not to seek reelection to a second term on the board. 

A meet the candidates night will be held on Wednesday, March 11 at 7pm at the Northport American Legion.
