Update regarding Newmark contract, district properties to be provided at next BOE meeting

A board of education meeting scheduled for Thursday, November 30 in the Northport High School auditorium will include time for board members to convene into a “committee of the whole,” during which the entire board will publicly deliberate and discuss the findings, to date, of the Financial Planning Board Committee. Projected next steps regarding the three school district properties up for potential sale and/or lease will also be discussed.

According to the November 30 agenda, public comment will follow immediately after the board’s discussion.

The Financial Planning Board Committee was created at the October 18 Northport-East Northport board of education meeting for the purpose of addressing financial factors influencing the potential sale or lease of the three buildings – Dickinson Avenue Elementary School, Bellerose Avenue Elementary School and the William J. Brosnan building. Committee members include board of education (BOE) trustees Larry Licopoli, Donna McNaughton, Thomas Loughran, David Badanes and Carol Taylor.

The committee has met twice since its inception; the last meeting was held on November 16.

Also anticipated at the November 30 meeting is an update on the working relationship between the district and Newmark Realty, hired in November 2022 to provide brokerage services for the sale or lease of the three properties.

According to the district’s contract with Newmark, an official copy of which was obtained by the Journal last week, the agreement between the district and Newmark began on January 1, 2023 and will expire on June 30, 2024 but “may be terminated by either party upon thirty (30) days written notice to the other party.”

“Any decisions made regarding changes to the contract with Newmark would be at the direction of the board,” Superintendent Robert Banzer told the Journal. The superintendent also confirmed with the Journal that an update regarding the district’s available properties will be provided at the upcoming meeting.

The BOE meeting, scheduled for 7pm in the high school auditorium, will also be available for viewing via Zoom here: https://zoom.us/j/92669083647.
