A home in Northport Village flocked with flamingos last week, as part of a fundraiser organized by the high school PTSA.

A colorful display of unexpected – and unseasonal – joy has been migrating across Northport and East Northport, with more than 95 bright pink flamingos finding temporary homes on front lawns across the district.

“You’ve Been Flocked” is the Northport High School PTSA’s latest fundraising effort: with a donation of $15 or more, participants can send a flock of plastic flamingos to the front yards of unsuspecting family, friends, or neighbors.

Once informed of the fundraiser (a sign that identifies the group and cause comes with the flock), the recipient can then choose to “hire” a flamingo wrangler to immediately remove and relocate the birds. Should the recipient take no action, the birds will automatically migrate to their next location three to four days later.

According to PTSA president Alex Meadows, the fundraising effort is in support of “building improvements” at the high school, and hopefully enough money will be raised “to provide a meaningful purchase that supports/can be used by all students" there.

The fundraiser began with six flocks of flamingos, and 12-14 birds per flock. Due to high demand, two more flocks were added over the weekend. A team of “specially trained flamingo wranglers” has been moving the flocks around town based on the community’s orders, and will continue to do so until temperatures drop enough to make the ground impenetrable to flamingo feet.

To send a flock of your own, scan the QR code on the flyer below, make a payment, and complete the Google form linked in the payment system.
