The next COMPASS community workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, at Northport High School at 7pm. The COMPASS: Charting Our Future Together initiative is a yearlong process designed to engage residents, families and staff in shaping a long-range plan for the district; the upcoming session will focus on the future of the district’s school buildings and how their spaces align with today’s learning expectations. The session will also highlight safety and security features in the buildings and introduce how long-term planning can enable efficient use of current spaces.

“Our newest school was built in 1966,” read a press release from the district. “Since then, what students need and what families expect have changed a lot, including safety and security and what it takes to be ready for college and careers.”

During the March 18 workshop, participants will be asked to share written feedback, which will be summarized and presented to the board of education as part of the district’s long-range planning process. Past workshops have also included an opening presentation by school officials, followed by discussion in small groups.

The workshop is open to all residents, including parents, staff, alumni and community members without children in the schools. Complimentary child care will be available for children five and older. More information about COMPASS and the March 18 workshop is available at northport.k12.ny.us/COMPASS. The final COMPASS community session will take place on April 27 and focus on financial planning for the future. A report presenting the COMPASS board’s findings will take place later in the spring.
