Candidate packets for election to the Northport-East Northport Board of Education were recently made available via the school district; district residents who are interested in seeking election to the board can pick up packets from the district clerk at the William J. Brosnan building.

Current board of education trustees Donna McNaughton and David Badanes, whose terms expire this year, have confirmed with the Journal their intentions to run for reelection.

A schedule of voting details for both the budget vote and election of trustees was approved at the January 26 school board meeting: Voting will take place on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 from 6am to 9pm at Fifth Avenue School, Dickinson Avenue School and the William J. Brosnan building.

Superintendent Robert Banzer first presented the budget overview at the meeting in January; a second meeting on the non-instructional budget was held on February 16. Remaining dates for special BOE meetings to discuss portions of the proposed budget are March 16 and 30. The meeting on March 30 will also have time for a preliminary public hearing.

DIstrict officials described the remaining meetings as follows:

  • Thursday, March 16: Instructional budget overview

  • Thursday, March 30: Revenue, fund balance and reserves overview; preliminary public hearing

  • Thursday, April 13: Board to discuss budget in committee-of-the-whole; reconvene into public session to finalize budget

A special meeting for the final adoption of the proposed budget is scheduled for Thursday, April 13, at 7pm at the William J. Brosnan building, with a public hearing to present the final proposed budget to voters to be held on Thursday, May 4 at 7pm, also at the Brosnan building.

Residents seeking more information on the trustee election may contact the district clerk at 631-262-6608. Candidates up for consideration must be at least 18 years of age, a resident of the district for one year, and a qualified voter of the district. Candidate petitions require a minimum of 79 signatures (2% of those voting in last year’s budget vote and trustee election) and are due in the district clerk’s office by 5pm on Monday, April 17.
