Volunteers invited to help preserve Northport Burying Ground on July 25
A volunteer cleanup at Northport Burying Ground will take place on Saturday, July 25. Community members can sign up for one or both of two cleanup sessions.
Community members are invited to help preserve a piece of Northport’s history during a volunteer cleanup at Northport Burying Ground on Saturday, July 25. The event is part of the Town of Huntington’s Historic Cemetery Restoration program.
Historic burying grounds, including those throughout Northport, provide a unique window into a community’s past, reads a 2021 blog entry created by the Northport Historical Society. Cemeteries such as Northport Burying Ground preserve the stories of generations of former residents through their gravestones and memorials, the society wrote.
As part of the townwide effort, restoration needs at 20 historic cemeteries will be assessed and preservation work completed. Volunteers this weekend will help clean and maintain the Revolutionary War burial site – all ages are welcome, and no prior experience is needed.
Two cleanup sessions will be held at the Northport Burying Ground on 25A, just east of Sandy Hollow Road. Parking for the event will be at 28 Millard Drive in Northport. “Historic cemeteries are an important part of Huntington’s identity,” Councilwoman Theresa Mari said in a statement. “When we care for these grounds, we are showing respect for the people who came before us and helping keep their legacy alive for the next generation. By caring for these historic burial grounds, we are not only preserving our local heritage, but also paying tribute to the brave individuals who helped shape our nation.”
The restoration effort is organized by Mari, Councilman Dr. Dave Bennardo, Supervisor Edmund Smyth, Assemblyman Keith Brown and Town Historian Robert Hughes.
