Decades ago, the Mayor of Northport and local hardware store proprietors stumbled upon an old gag gift. They had a good laugh, and gave it an honorary salute. From that quirky moment, the Northport Leg Lamp Lighting has grown to become a beloved community celebration of local talent, small-town charm, and the Village’s unique ability to come together over something whimsical – while creating something spectacular.

Each year, on Small Business Saturday, the Northport Leg Lamp Lighting event draws roughly 1,500 people to Main Street. It is no easy undertaking. Community support helps cover event costs like professional lighting and sound. Proceeds feed the Firefly Lights Fund, enhancing future events and funding local sponsorships and scholarships.

Contributions from local restaurants for pre- and post-event gatherings as part of a delicious “Taste of Northport” are welcome, as are donated raffle prizes, displayed in The Firefly Artists’ windows, which also help highlight the “Shop Local” spirit of the season.

For more information on sponsorship opportunities or to make a donation, text 631-235-2739. A GoFundMe to help support the effort can be found here. The leg lamp lighting will take place in front of The Firefly Artists at 90 Main Street on Saturday, November 30, at 6:30pm. Read the Journal’s 2022 article highlighting the leg lamp’s return to its original Main Street location here.
