Support local: Next week’s chili fundraiser at Tim’s to benefit Northport Chamber of Commerce

The Northport Chamber of Commerce’s chili fundraiser is quickly approaching, and Chamber president Janet Hoeft is hoping to draw a crowd. Sponsored by Tim’s Shipwreck Diner, the event promises to be a cozy evening of casual socializing at one of Northport’s favorite locales.

The Chamber is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping local businesses and enriching the lives of residents and business owners through community support, sponsored events and more.

“We really don’t make a lot of money,” said Hoeft. “Yet people come to us constantly for money to help them with different things.” Many events around town – from concerts in the park to community get-togethers – are supplemented with money from the Chamber. Some of the money raised at next week’s chili fundraiser, said Hoeft, might be used to purchase bigger and better holiday decor for the Village (think three-dimensional snowflakes that the Chamber would own rather than renting the flat ones every year).

The Shipwreck has been a popular topic of conversation lately, as longtime owner Tim Hess officially announced earlier this month the sale of his Main Street building and business to Northport Village resident Denis Beyersdorf.

While the idea for the chili fundraiser was conceived months ago, Hess wanted the sale of Tim’s Shipwreck to be finalized and the new owners on board with the event prior to committing to it. Hoeft met with Beyersdorf recently to solidify the plan and was greeted with instant approval.

“He thought it would be a great way to introduce himself and his partners to the community,” said Hoeft. “They want to join the Chamber, and they’re doing the fundraiser for us, which is very, very generous.” The event is open to the public, with all proceeds going to the Chamber. “We’re looking forward to it,” Hoeft continued. “Denis is wonderful, we all know [Tim] is wonderful, I think it’ll be a really nice evening.”

The chili fundraiser will take place at Tim’s Shipwreck Diner on Thursday, January 26, at 6:30pm. Tickets are $35 per person and include hot chili, corn bread, salad, beverages, and dessert. Tickets can be purchased at Artisan House (80 Main Street) or Village Kitchen and Tile Expo (101 Main Street), or by calling Dorothy Walsh at 631-662-7244.
