Northport High School graduate Craig Herskowitz announced on October 25 his campaign against Republican Rep. Nick LaLota. Now a Democratic candidate for United States Congress in New York’s 1st Congressional District in Suffolk County, Herskowitz has resigned from his position as a New York City judge to join the race, and has recently reported raising over $100,000 on his Q3 filing with the Federal Elections Commission.

“After testing the waters and talking to constituents, I recognized a strong desire from Democrats to nominate someone that can bring excitement and a fresh approach to the race to take on Rep. Nick LaLota. I am ready to bring a new generation of Democratic leadership to eastern Long Island,” Herskowitz said.

“If we put aside divisive and destructive politics in favor of listening to each other and working together we can make progress solving the country’s most pressing problems.”

Herskowitz joins in the primary fellow Northport resident and former State Senator Jim Gaughran, who announced his bid for the 1st Congressional District in August. Nancy Goroff, a former candidate who ran against Zeldin in 2020, announced this month that she would seek the seat once again.

The native New Yorker graduated from American University and Quinnipiac University School of Law. He served as assistant counsel to Governor Andrew Cuomo during the Covid-19 pandemic and has held positions at the U.S. Marshals Service, the F.B.I., the U.S. Department of Justice Criminal Division, JPMorgan Chase, and the offices of Senator Edward Kennedy and Congressman Steve Israel.

“Congress should not be led by individuals with strong right-leaning ideologies who prioritize chaos and government shutdowns,” Herskowitz said. “It is essential for Congress to have members who prioritize their constituents, work towards ethical conduct, and steer away from divisive politics. Long Islanders need and deserve representatives who go to work every day with one goal in mind: serve the voters who have trusted them to protect and improve their communities.”
