A free family concert presented by the Northport Symphony Orchestra (NSO) next Friday, March 15 will include special guest and locally renowned music director Don Sherman, as well as Northport High School’s own Carter Shin, a cellist, for a night of music inspired by fairytales and legends.

Under the baton of Eric Mahl, the concert will feature excerpts from musical works by a variety of composers including Mussorgsky, Rossini, Grieg, Saint-Saens, and others. Through a combination of performance, narration by Don Sherman, and interaction with the audience, Mahl and the orchestra will guide audience members into the beautiful and magical world of the stories that inspired these great compositions.

Mahl made his debut with the orchestra at the April 18, 2023 concert, and this concert is part of his first season as music director of NSO. He has titled the 2023-2024 season “Transformations,” and proposed this family-oriented concert to enhance programming for the season.

The featured soloist is Northport High School freshman Carter Shin, who will perform the first movement of Camille Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto no.1.

Carter is currently a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (MYO), and has been selected to perform at Long Island String Festival (LISFA) and All-County (SCMEA) for the past five years. A member of the Northport High School Symphony Orchestra since the 8th grade, Carter has also attended the music program at Usdan Summer Arts for the past three years, is applying to the Philadelphia International Summer Music Festival (PIMF) this spring, and will be auditioning for music precollege this spring for the upcoming fall 2024 term.

Admission to this family concert is free. NSO reps urge families to “bring your children and show them what a wonderful world awaits them as they learn about these classical masterpieces.”

NSO’s Family Concert: Inspired by Fairytales and Legends will take place on Friday, March 15 at 7pm at Northport High School, 154 Laurel Hill Road in Northport. For more information, visit www.northportsymphony.org.
