Northport Village resident Scott Gibney was recognized last weekend by the New York Mets as their Small Business Veteran of the Game.

A 1982 graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Gibney served as a member of the United States Navy for 30 years, from 1982 to 2012, when he retired as a captain.

During his career, Captain Gibney spent 17 years in senior leadership positions including commanding officer, executive officer and chief staff officer as part of Military Sealift Command (MSC), the nation’s leading provider of ocean transportation for the Department of Defense.

He led strategic sealift operation requirements in support of national security objectives around the world including in Europe, the Middle East/Africa, Asia and the United States. In this role he advised on operational requirements at global ports for U.S. and coalition forces in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, as well as Desert Storm.

Gibney’s military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), National Defense Service Medal and Naval Overseas Service ribbon.

Gibney and his wife Susan are the owners of Gibney Solutions LLC (College & Career), a small business that helps students and their families with the college admissions process, as well as with early career development.

“As a lifelong Mets fan, it was a thrill to be able to represent the US Navy and fellow veterans at Citifield,” Gibney said.
