Legislator Stephanie Bontempi honored Karen Holland Breen as the Suffolk County Woman of Distinction for the 18th Legislative District during the Suffolk County Woman of Distinction Celebration Luncheon on March 10.

Breen has spent decades as a committed community leader, faith-based volunteer and advocate for veterans, families and local institutions. A longtime member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, she has supported scholarships, charitable initiatives, parish programs and catechetical training, earning the St. Pius X Award for her service.

Her dedication to the Northport-East Northport community extends through her involvement with the Asharoken Garden Club, the Girl Scouts, various PTA and booster organizations and her roles as a choir member and Extraordinary Minister at St. Philip Neri Church.

She has also been a consistent advocate for veterans through Team RWB, General Needs, Ltd. and the USA Patriots Amputee Softball Team, helping coordinate events, fundraising and outreach that support veterans transitioning to civilian life.

A Northport resident since 1987, Breen built a distinguished career at Con Edison, becoming the first woman to serve as chief construction inspector in Queens. She later oversaw electric operations complaints and procurement for major infrastructure projects. For more than three decades, she has led the St. Charles Hospital Auxiliary Northport Chapter, supporting pediatric care and earning both the Spirit of St. Charles Award and recognition as a Woman of Distinction in 2025.

Breen is a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother who “represents the very best of Suffolk County, [is] a tireless advocate, a compassionate neighbor and a true leader,” Legislator Bontempi said. “Her decades of service have touched countless lives, and it is an honor to recognize her as our Woman of Distinction for 2026.”
