Northport Rotary book drive benefits children worldwide; last week to donate

The Northport Rotary Club is currently accepting books for its annual book drive, which lasts until the end of May. Via the drive, community members are invited to support Hindi’s Libraries, a local nonprofit organization that has transformed loss into a growing mission to bring books and literacy resources to children around the world.

Founded in memory of Long Island English teacher Dr. Hindi Krinsky, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 32, Hindi’s Libraries began with a simple goal: building three small free-standing libraries in her children’s school to honor her love of reading and literature. Family and friends reached out to the community for gently used books to help fill the shelves – and the response was overwhelming.

Within just two weeks, nearly 500 books had been donated, sparking what would become a much larger movement.

Since its founding, Hindi’s Libraries has collected more than 400,000 books and partnered with more than 750 organizations across all 50 states and internationally, including in India, Africa, Haiti and Puerto Rico. All books are distributed free of charge to children and families through a wide range of community partners, including homeless shelters, foster care agencies, hospitals, pediatric clinics, domestic violence shelters, orphanages and community support organizations.

Today, as part of the Northport Rotary’s children’s book drive, collection boxes can be found throughout Northport, East Northport, Elwood, Centerport and other communities within the Town of Huntington, making it easy for residents to participate in the organization’s mission. Donations of gently used children’s books are currently being accepted. Books should be in good condition and free of tears, stains, writing, missing pages or missing pieces. For many local families, donating a book is a way to continue the legacy of a woman whose love of literacy continues to impact thousands of children every year.
