The following article was submitted by John Daniello, the marketing and membership coordinator at Northport Historical Society.

This October, Northport Historical Society invites the public to celebrate National Coming Out Day with two special events.

Join the society on Thursday, October 5 for a special Society Lecture Series featuring Northport author and artist Greg Fox. Fox will speak about his experiences in Northport, which led to the creation of his widely successful comic series, Kyle’s Bed & Breakfast.

Centered around the town of Northport, Kyle’s Bed & Breakfast is the world’s only comic strip about a gay bed and breakfast. The strip premiered in 1998 and currently runs in a variety of publications across North America, as well as in online publications. The first book in the Kyle’s Bed & Breakfast collection, published in 2004, was a Lambda Literary Award Finalist for “Best Humor Book” (2005).

Joe Schramm, executive producer of the first ever Northport Pridefest, will take the stage to talk about why hosting a Pride event in Northport is important and reveal the dates for the 2024 Pridefest.

Month-long celebration continues with “Stories of PRIDE!”
The exhibit everyone was talking about in June returns this October for National Coming Out Day (and continues all month). Curated and designed by the society’s marketing and membership coordinator John Daniello, the “Stories of PRIDE!” mini exhibit will showcase the amazing personal stories of pride and coming out submitted by attendees at Northport’s first PrideFest. In addition, visitors can share their own coming out stories on the feature walls in the mini exhibit, while learning about National Coming Out Day.

“The original PRIDE! exhibit received such positive feedback from visitors. I knew I had to put together another exhibit to raise awareness about Coming Out Day and empower people to be themselves. It’s great to see Northport Historical Society’s continued support for the LGBTQ+ community through these exhibits and events.” Daniello said.

Copies of Kyle’s Bed & Breakfast will be available for purchase and signing after the October 5 event. This is a free event for all ages. Refreshments will be served. “Stories of PRIDE!” will be on display at the Northport Historical Society from October 1 through October 31. The museum and shop, located at 215 Main Street in Northport, are open Wednesday through  Sunday, from 1pm to 4:30pm. For more information, visit www.northporthistorical.org
