40 years of giving: Northport FD to host blood drive celebrating 2,500 donations

Blood donations nationwide typically drop by more than one-third during the winter months. To address that deficit during a critical time, New York Blood Center (NYBC) will host a blood drive at the Northport Fire Department on Friday, December 26 from 1:45 to 7:45pm. The blood drive will also celebrate the department’s achievement of surpassing 2,500 blood donations since beginning its partnership with NYBC more than 40 years ago. 

This milestone recognizes the fire department’s ongoing dedication to strengthening the region’s blood supply and making a meaningful impact on the local community. As a token of appreciation, a home-cooked meal will be served to all donors.

NYBC currently has just a three- to four-day supply of blood overall, leaving little margin for emergencies, severe weather or sudden spikes in hospital demand. Supplies of O-negative, O-positive and B-negative blood are critically low, with only a one- to two-day supply on hand, and donors are urgently needed.
