Frank D’Agostino, a local landscape photographer, has found a new medium for his work – jigsaw puzzles. The self-taught photographer recently signed a deal with the largest puzzle manufacturer in America and his first photograph-turned-puzzle features a colorful glimpse of fall over Northport Harbor.

D’Agostino got the bug for photography while working for the Travel Channel (earlier in his career, he worked for Discovery Channel and History Channel, where he produced content for advertisers and led brand partnerships). Still on “the business side of television,” he gets behind the camera on the weekends to photograph landscapes, with an emphasis on the beach and sunsets, he told the Journal, finding solace “in the meeting point of land, sea and sky.” His favorite time to shoot is in October and November, with the crisp skylines early in the morning and late at night, especially vibrant times of day in Northport.

A Dix Hills resident, D’Agostino often showcases and sells his work at fine art fairs and festivals, including at Northport Village’s Art in the Park. While at a fair in Southampton, he was approached by – though he didn’t know at the time – the owner of Springbok Puzzles. Based out of Kansas City, Missouri, Springbok is the largest puzzle manufacturer in the country.

A couple of months later, D’Agostino received a phone call from the company. He now has a deal with Springbok for three of his images to be made into puzzles. The first puzzle, currently available on Amazon and on the Springbok website, is of fall at Northport Harbor, a photo he took in late October 2023.

That same photo is being used by The Northport Hotel on postcards for guests.

“It’s been an interesting journey. It started off small. It still is small,” D’Agostino said. “Fast forward and here I am now selling puzzles. It’s just validation and reinforcement when you get to share your work like this.”
