Join this weekend’s Turkey Trot and help support the Northport Relay for Life

At 10am on Saturday, November 22, the Northport High School Relay for Life club will present its first ever Turkey Trot Challenge, a fundraiser that invites participants to dress up (or down) and trot the high school track in an effort to fight cancer, help those affected by the disease and support survivors.

The lead-up to the Northport Relay for Life usually gets loud a few months before the big event, this time scheduled for June 13, 2026. Not everyone is aware, however, of the efforts that occur way before June.

On Saturday, November 22, the Northport High School Relay for Life club will present its first ever Turkey Trot Challenge, a fun lap-by-lap fundraising event that allows individuals and teams to raise crucial funds prior to June. Participants in the trot get people to donate pledges for each lap they walk, run or trot. The amount of laps completed is up to the individual participants/teams. An extra fun addition? Dressing up as a Thanksgiving character or in a team theme and running one lap in a costume race can win you a prize.

A chapter in The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement – the world’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event dedicated to saving lives from cancer, and helping those affected by the disease –  the Northport Relay for Life, and its high school club, runs all year, culminating in an overnight outdoor event in June,  which include bands, a DJ, games, food and numerous community vendors.

Over the years, the community has had a huge impact on the fight against cancer and often  has the largest relay on Long Island in number of survivors that attend (over 50 each year), number of participants and in fundraising dollars, according to Chelsea Whitney of the American Cancer Society’s northeast region.

The Northport-East Northport school district and community have raised nearly $2.5 million in the fight against cancer since beginning their relay in 2009.

To join the trot, simply register individually or as a team or join an existing team here (scroll down to see the flier); have people commit to a certain amount of money for each lap you walk; and, should you choose, dress up as a Thanksgiving character or have your team in themed wear. The Turkey Trot takes place at the Northport High School Field on November 22 at 10am. Donuts and hot cocoa will be served. Prizes for a costume race (one lap) and for the highest money raised will also be awarded.
