A new program debuted in Northport Village earlier this month, with 21 banners featuring local veterans now flying high above Main Street. The Northport Hometown Heroes Banner program, begun by resident Jim McKenna and the Northport American Legion, were installed just before Veteran’s Day. They will return in 2025, when they are scheduled to be on view from May through November, McKenna said.

Included in the 21 veterans being honored are three Gold Star families: Nathan B. Bruckenthal, John W. Engeman and Christopher Scherer. McKenna’s uncle William McKenna (Commander of the Northport American Legion and Vietnam vet) and father James P. McKenna (First Vice Commander and fellow Vietnam vet) are also featured side-by-side on the same pole. The banner for WWII veteran Valentine Ryan, the late father of Main Street psychic/medium Winter Brook Ryan, is located in front of her building.

The complete list of veterans featured in this year’s program are:
Nathan B. Bruckenthal
