Legislator Stephanie Bontempi recognized East Northport resident Mary McCue this week as the 18th Legislative District’s honoree during the Suffolk County Legislature’s Women Veterans Recognition ceremony.
A United States Marine Corps veteran, McCue served from 2003 to 2010 as an ammunition technician, achieving the rank of sergeant. In 2004, during the early stages of the Iraq War, she deployed with Combat Service Support Group-121, supporting critical ammunition transport from Kuwait into Iraq. During her second deployment in 2006, she served as records chief at the ammunition supply point in Al Taqaddum, Iraq, with Combat Logistics Regiment-15, where her leadership helped ensure uninterrupted ammunition resupply operations for units operating in Ramadi, Fallujah and Habbaniyah.
Her military awards include the Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, two Navy unit commendations, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and two Certificates of Commendation.
While serving as a sergeant, McCue was also a starting forward on the Marine Corps women’s basketball team.
Today, she continues her service as a volunteer mentor with the Nassau County Veterans Treatment Court, providing peer support to justice-involved veterans. Drawing on her military experience, she helps participants navigate treatment, meet court requirements and successfully reintegrate into civilian life.
Her mentorship provides encouragement, accountability and connections to vital community resources, reflecting her ongoing commitment to helping fellow veterans achieve stability, wellness and long-term success.
“Mary McCue exemplifies the courage, leadership and dedication that define our women veterans,” said Legislator Bontempi. “Her service in Iraq, her commitment to supporting fellow Marines and her continued mentorship through the Veterans Treatment Court demonstrate a lifelong devotion to helping others. It is an honor to recognize her during this year's Women Veterans Recognition ceremony.”
