An East Northport orthodontist will be honored next month for his work with people with autism, as well as his advocacy and support of the autism community.

Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism (NSSA) recently announced its annual Dinner for Our Children event where, this year, the nonprofit organization will honor Robert Schindel, DDS, an East Northport resident with a practice on Larkfield Road.

“Since 1993 we have relied on this event to raise the funds necessary to close the gap between government funding and the actual cost of providing our highly individualized and quality programs and services,” a spokesperson from NSSA told the Journal.

Located in Commack, Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism provides high quality, life-long support through services, including the most advanced treatment and training programs, which enable people with autism to function better in everyday life.

A practicing orthodontist in East Northport for over 20 years, Dr. Schindel has partnered with NSSA on research studies, educated orthodontic students on how to successfully work with individuals with autism, and secured donations of modified dental equipment to help NSSA prepare those they serve for dental visits.

“Finding an orthodontist who was willing to work with [our daughter] was challenging. Dr. Schindel and his staff could not have been more patient or accommodating. He made what we thought was impossible a reality. We are forever grateful and couldn’t imagine a better choice for this year’s honoree,” said the father of a former NSSA student, and a patient at Schindel Orthodontics.

While having held many leadership posts in the Suffolk County and New York Dental Society, Schindel is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, as well as a member of the American Dental Association, the Northeast Society of Orthodontists and the American Association of Orthodontists. He is also proud to have been appointed to the editorial board of The Angle Orthodontist, one of the most prestigious orthodontic journals in the world.

Schindel received his undergraduate training at Binghamton University, graduating with honors for outstanding academic achievement and was awarded membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to do his dental and orthodontic training at the School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook, where he has been a professor of orthodontics at the School of Dental Medicine since 1994. In 2023, he received the Dental Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award from Stony Brook.

NSSA’s Dinner for Our Children event will be held on Saturday, April 13, at 7pm at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. For more information, or to purchase tickets, click here.
