Northport Village resident Linda Oristano was recently honored as a Suffolk County Woman of Distinction for the 18th District by Legislator Stephanie Bontempi (R-18th L.D.). A celebration luncheon was held at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge this last Tuesday, March 4.

Executive director of the Northport/East Northport Community Drug and Alcohol Task Force (NENDATF), Oristano’s dedication to community service and advocacy has earned her numerous accolades, including recognition as one of Long Island’s Top 50 Women, the Humanitarian Award from the Special Olympics, and the Soroptimist Award for “Making a Difference for Women.”

Bontempi announced this most recent honor to Oristano’s fellow community members at the NENDATF’s Speed Networking event, held at the Northport American Legion on February 27. There, Oristano helped spearhead a gathering of friends, neighbors and professionals that highlighted not only the NENDATF’s accomplishments but also provided the opportunity to learn about the people, businesses and organizations that make up the community.

With extensive experience in counseling, advocacy, mentoring, and education, Oristano has devoted her time to supporting the elderly, individuals facing personal challenges, and those seeking spiritual guidance. She is a Certified Addiction Recovery Coach, a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate, M.A.T. trained, a CASAC-T, an Associate of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and a Credentialed Spiritual Director. Her career spans over 30 years in social services, community service, training, and healthcare.

“Linda’s dedication to improving the lives of so many in our community is truly inspiring. Her work has made a lasting impact on our local families, and she is incredibly deserving of this honor,” stated Legislator Bontempi.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to be recognized with the Suffolk County District 18 Woman of Distinction award,” Oristano told the Journal in a statement. “This recognition is not only a testament to my dedication and passion but also to the incredible support of those who have inspired and believed in me throughout my journey. A significant part of my work has been with the Drug and Alcohol field, where I've had the privilege of collaborating with dedicated individuals to address addiction and its impact on our community.”

Her role with the NENDATF has been incredibly fulfilling, Oristano continued, and it motivates her to continue championing for positive change. She also credited her mother, who has given her strength and been a guiding force throughout her life, Oristano said.

“Her unwavering support, resilience, and dedication to helping others have shaped the person I am today. I’ve followed in her footsteps, striving to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those around me, just as she has done throughout her life.”

In addition to her professional work, Oristano’s volunteer efforts have provided a constant source of inspiration, allowing her to connect with others and contribute to causes she truly believes in. “I am truly grateful for the opportunity to make a difference, and this award further fuels my commitment to serving my community,” Oristano said. “This achievement is a reflection of the collective efforts of all those who have supported me, and I share this moment with them.”
