Coming up: Rotary’s Wine on the Harbor event to honor Acompora Foundation

Established in 2000, the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation focuses on the placement of AEDs in all schools, youth organizations and public gathering places.

The Northport Rotary Club’s annual Wine on the Harbor event has been set for Thursday, August 6, at the Harbor Club at Prime. This year’s event honors the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation.

Established in 2000 by Karen and John Acompora, the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation focuses on the placement of Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) in all schools, youth organizations and public gathering places.

The foundation was founded following the tragic death of the Acomporas’ 14 year-old son Louis from a condition known as commotio cordis, which resulted from a blow to his chest while playing lacrosse during his first high school game.

The Acomporas’ tireless efforts via the foundation efforts led to the passing of “Louis’ Law,” which was signed into law by Governor George Pataki on May 7, 2002. The first of its kind in the country, Louis’ Law requires that all public schools have AEDs in their buildings and at all sporting events. To date, the law has saved 130 lives.

Wine on the Harbor runs from 6 to 9pm and features an open bar, wine tastings, dinner, live music and dancing. Proceeds go toward local and national charities that support veterans, children’s health, food pantries, clean water and more. Tickets cost $150 and are available online at NorthportRotary.org.
