The Northport Rotary Club is hosting its annual book drive to support basic education and literacy for children; donations will be given to Hindi’s Libraries, a Long Island not-for-profit organization that donates books to more than 350 organizations nationwide spanning across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Africa, India, and Israel.

The drive will last throughout the month of May.

Over the last five years, the Rotary has collected and donated over 40,000 books. Organizations that benefit from the drive include homeless shelters, foster care agencies, low-income schools, legal aid societies and hospitals. Some books will also be shipped to a library in Mbitini Primary School in Maasai Mari, Kenya.

New and gently used books may be donated and should be free of tears, stains, marks, missing pages and missing pieces. Acceptable donations include books for infants through young adults (board books, picture books, chapter books, novels). The Rotary asks that community members not donate coloring books, activity books, study material, cookbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries, games or prayer books.

Collection boxes are at the following locations:  St. Philip Neri Church, St Anthony’s of Padua (church, school and outreach), Trinity Episcopal Church, Abiding Presence Lutheran Church, Centerport United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Weekday Nursery School, Northport Middle School, East Northport Middle School, Northport High School, Ocean Avenue Elementary School, Northport Library, East Northport Library, Northport Village Hall, Coach Realtors Northport, First National Bank Northport, Shindokan Budo, YDA, Visiting Nurse Services and Hospice House, Laurel Laundromat and Northport Physical Therapy.
