Deacon Donna Galluccio, president of the Northport-East Northport Ecumenical Lay Council (ELC) at First Presbyterian Church in Northport Village, has put out a call for donations to help fill the shelves of its food pantry.
The ELC Food Pantry currently serves close to 150 families in the Northport-East Northport community; many of those families come to the pantry once a week for food and support. And that need is growing, all year long.
“Since our inception, we have relied on the support of our local PTAs and Scout troops for food drives and donations to fill our shelves,” Galluccio wrote in a letter to the community. “But since Covid, food drives have diminished in number, and our resources are now in short supply.”
“Please keep in mind that the need is real throughout the year, and not just during certain seasons. A steady stream of your support would have a significant positive impact on the health and well-being of hundreds of our neighbors,” she continued.
The deacon suggested numerous ways to help the pantry replenish its shelves, including scheduling food drives at schools and other organizations, or making a cash donation so that the ELC can purchase fresh milk, eggs, fruits and vegetables for its clients.
Wish list items and needs include peanut butter and jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, oatmeal, soup, one- or two-pound packs of rice, macaroni and cheese, and small containers of staples such as oil, flour, sugar, coffee and condiments. Toiletries, feminine hygiene products, and cleaning supplies (dish soap, laundry soap) are also appreciated.
The pantry is located on the lower level of First Presbyterian Church at 330 Main Street in Northport and is open Monday through Thursday 10am to 12pm. Those who want to make a monetary donation can mail a check made out to “ELC Food Pantry” to Box 675, Northport, NY, 11768. For more information, call 631-261-4357.
