One of Northport’s most kid-friendly – and crowded –  summer destinations is getting an overhaul as crews today began groundbreaking and demolition work for a brand new playground system at Crab Meadow Beach Park.

According to officials from the Town of Huntington (TOH), after last week’s EOSPA meeting “it was determined that, due to safety concerns, the park area at the Frank Petrone Crab Meadow Beach would be demolished.” The TOH acted immediately by dismantling the playground area beginning today, March 18.

EOSPA funding for the playground was approved in the amount of $300,000, and approved by the town board at the March 12 board meeting.

The new playground will be ADA compliant and accessible, with the town taking safety and longevity issues into prominent consideration, officials added.

“When you have a play structure on the water, especially salt water, you can expect that the life expectancy of those structures will be shortened,” said TOH Supervisor Ed Smyth. “With the salt, sand and wind attacking the structures on a daily basis, you can imagine what it will do to a playground’s longevity. It is our hope that with special planning and safety considerations, this new play area at the Frank Petrone Crab Meadow Beach Park will exceed life expectancy and be around for our children’s enjoyment for a long time to come.”

Weather pending, renovations and upgrades are expected to take six to eight weeks for completion, just in time for the peak summer season.
