It’s the final countdown for runners wishing to participate in the 2023 Great Cow Harbor 10K, as event organizers are predicting the race to sell out soon. Registration for the run opened in March and is on pace to fill up well ahead of race day; last year’s race sold out two weeks ahead of the event.

This year’s race will be held Saturday, September 23 and once again has been designated as the USATF 10K National Championships.

The Great Cow Harbor 10K Run is the largest 10K on Long Island, as well as one of the most prestigious national 10K foot races in the country. Runner's World has named the Great Cow Harbor 10K Run as one of the top 100 races in the US, and New England Runner regularly places it in its Top 100 Races, referring to it as a “winner” with a “big race atmosphere in a small town on the Island.” Five thousand runners participated in last year’s event.

Another 1,000 runners are expected to run in the 2K Fun Run/Walk, a popular event that offers something for everyone, from beginner runners and children to experienced athletes.

Sad news: “The Voice of Long Island Running” dies at 68
Longtime sports announcer Terry Bisogno died on Saturday, August 5, after a lengthy battle with colon cancer. He was 68.

A beloved voice and familiar face, Bisogno announced at the Cow Harbor 10K finish line for many years, beginning in 2006, when he was able to call the-then course record run of Ryan Hall. For the next 13 years he lit up Main Street on race day, forging friendships with participants from all over the nation.

Local residents left touching tributes to Bisogno on the Great Cow Harbor Facebook page, remembering not only the warmth of his voice and attention to detail but his efforts to get to know so many runners personally.

“Terry added a whole new excitement to the Great Cow Harbor 10K Finish Line,” wrote race organizers on their Facebook page. “He set the gold standard of finish line excitement. But what we always most loved about working with Terry was his passion for others and his desire to make everyone feel like the only person crossing that finish line. He had a gift and he used that gift to benefit so many others.”

A memorial service will be held for Terry Bisogno on Saturday, August 12 from 5 to 8pm at the Christopher T. Jordan Funeral Home in Island Park, with a prayer service taking place at 6pm.
