Grow local: Northport Native Garden Initiative kicks off fifth annual spring sale

NNGI founders and volunteers gather for a photo at last year’s spring sale plant pick-up.

The Northport Native Garden Initiative (NNGI) is back with its fifth annual spring sale, giving local residents a chance to stock their gardens with more than 90 varieties of native plants, shrubs and trees.

The sale is NNGI’s biggest fundraiser of the year. All proceeds go right back into Northport and surrounding areas through projects like public gardens, educational programs and tree plantings. If you’ve noticed more native plantings popping up locally in recent years, there’s a good chance NNGI had a hand in it.

If you’re new to native gardening, the idea is simple: these are plants that naturally grow in our area, so they tend to do really well here. They’re also a favorite for butterflies, birds and pollinators, which means your yard becomes a little hub of activity once things start to bloom. As a bonus, native plants are generally low maintenance once they’re established.

That said, a little planning goes a long way. NNGI recommends checking each plant’s preferred sunlight, soil conditions and expected size before planting to make sure it has the right spot to thrive. The online shop includes those details, making it easy for beginners and seasoned gardeners alike.

NNGI’s online sale runs through Sunday, May 10, with plant pick-up scheduled for Saturday, May 30 from 10am to 3pm in Northport Village. The exact location will be shared ahead of pick-up day. The online shop can be found here

Looking to get more involved? NNGI is seeking volunteers to help sort and organize orders, and assist neighbors during pick-up. If you’d like to volunteer, fill out this form
