Last week, Congressman Nick LaLota highlighted the Asharoken Seawall at a hearing for the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee regarding the Water Resources Development Act. Calling it a “crumbling seawall” to committee members, LaLota explained that due to weather conditions and the elevation of the road, there are times when the area is completely flooded, leaving the entire community stranded. “With every storm, the situation becomes more and more dire there,” he said at the hearing.

LaLota said there’s currently red tape stopping residents of Eatons Neck and Asharoken from getting the help they need. “I look forward to working with this committee and the Army Corps of Engineers to find a solution to this issue. I hope you would agree that my constituents deserve nothing less,” he concluded.

The Water Resources Development Act is a comprehensive legislative package that provides for the conservation and development of water and related resources. It authorizes the Secretary of the Army to conduct studies, construct projects, and research activities that can lead to the improvement of rivers and harbors within the United States.

“Last year, Asharoken Village Mayor Greg Letica gave me a tour of the seawall so I could see the damage and hear how it has impacted the community. The Asharoken Seawall has needed serious repairs for decades and I was grateful to be able to raise this issue with my colleagues in Washington. The Eatons Neck and Asharoken communities rely on the seawall to help connect them to Huntington and Long Island as a whole,” LaLota said in a press release following the hearing.
