It was a special week for Dana Porciello, who’s been dreaming of opening her own storefront for many years and finally revealed The Soothery to customers on Thursday, April 29. Occupying what used to be Barefoot Image at 106 Main Street in Northport Village, Dana’s store features handmade soaps, lotion bars and dry face masks, along with all things comfort, like soft blankets, pillows and candles.

Dana is confident the Village is an excellent match for what she offers. “Northport is such a great, small town with such a unique feel to it. And I feel like what I offer is a little unique, so it was just a natural fit,” she said.

Dana researched several places in her search for the perfect location and never got the feeling a space was right. It’s when she was out to eat with a friend one evening, at Salted on the Harbor, that the two strolled down Main Street and Dana noticed the “For Rent” sign in the window. “When I saw the sign, I just knew this would be it,” she said. She called the realtor in the morning, and in less than a week, had the key to her very own shop.

Like many things with a special meaning, the homemade products sold at The Soothery came to life during a difficult time for Dana. She’s a former ceramic artist, raising four children as a single mother.

“I went through a really challenging time in my life and I thought, ‘What can I do for myself, to make myself feel better?’ I wanted a creative outlet as something that would help me get through this difficult time. That’s why everything is uplifting, comforting and soft,” she explained.

Prior to opening The Soothery, Dana was selling her products online, at farmers’ markets and flower shows. For her, making the handmade products sold at her shop is a form of creative therapy. She learned along the way how to develop body care formulas using raw materials and how specific ingredients interact with one another to enhance the experience. She’s proud of putting her heart and soul into everything she does, and her own personal goal continues to be making people smile and feel comfortable in their own skin.
