Mama says: Footloose delivers energy, humor and heart at the Engeman

The John W. Engeman Theater’s production of Footloose is a lot of what you want in a summer show—upbeat, funny and filled with moments that leave you smiling. With a talented cast and solid choreography, this local production proves that big energy can come from a small-town stage.

Tanner Gleeson shines as Ren McCormack, a spunky high schooler from Chicago who – after his father abandons the family – moves with his mom to Bomont, a small rural town where dancing is outlawed. Gleeson brings a laid-back charm to the role, balancing Ren’s rebellious spirit with a big heart. His connection with the pastor’s daughter, Ariel Moore (Karina Gallagher), is both sweet and sincere; their scenes together provide some of the show’s most emotional moments.

On the smile scale, the show's biggest laughs come courtesy of Ryan Bronston as Willard Hewitt, Ren’s small-town sidekick who’s all heart and zero rhythm (at least at first). Bronston’s take on Willard is joyful and authentic, with a steady stream of one liners and self-deprecating wisecracks that never feel forced. His comedic timing (including during his rendition of “Mama Says”) had the audience laughing out loud; you can feel the crowd rooting for him as he attempts to turn his childhood crush on Rusty (Grace Ellis Solomon) into a real relationship.

Solomon provides another standout performance, lighting up the stage with her dynamic presence and vocals, particularly during “Let’s Hear It for the Boy.” She brings the right amount of sass to the role, helping tie the ensemble of high school friends together.

Directed by Tommy Ranieri with choreography by Trent Soyster, Footloose leans into the 1984 movie’s most entertaining elements—music, movement and lots of (very different) personalities. The show’s finale, featuring the iconic title track, had the audience on its feet, singing and dancing along like it was the law.

Footloose runs through August 24 at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport Village. Tickets start at $82 and can be purchased at engemantheater.com or by calling 631-261-2900.
