Engeman’s A Christmas Carol captures the spirit of the season, with two weeks left
A Christmas Carol, running at the Engeman Theater through December 28, is a visually rich production with standout performances that celebrate the season.
As the holiday season settles in, the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport presents A Christmas Carol, a heartfelt production that embraces the familiar rhythms and traditions of winter.
James Judy anchors the show as Ebenezer Scrooge, delivering a performance that balances sharp-edged grouchiness with genuine emotional growth. Judy’s connection to the role runs deep; he was part of the original company that opened A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden more than 30 years ago. That history shows in the confidence and nuance he brings to the stage. His transformation over the course of the show feels earned and he maintains a meaningful connection with the audience throughout.
The production itself is visually rich without feeling overdone. Scenic designer Kyle Dixon creates a wintery, old-world setting complete with flickering lanterns, wreath-lined windows, brick and stone textures and snow-dusted rooftops. One standout moment comes during Fezziwig’s Annual Christmas Ball, a lively and comical scene filled with spirited music and joyful choreography that injects warmth and positive momentum into the story.
Adrianne Hick shines as the Ghost of Christmas Past, bringing a gracious yet unflinching presence to Scrooge’s memories. Her performance is both enchanting and emotionally grounded, guiding Scrooge through formative moments with a quiet (and twinkling) authority that draws out the character’s regrets and tenderness. Her costuming and stage presence add to the otherworldly feel of the role without distracting from her position as a bridge between Scrooge’s past and present.
Tyler Price Robinson’s Ghost of Christmas Present brings a welcome burst of energy and levity to the stage, helping propel the story toward its conclusion while keeping the audience fully engaged.
A Christmas Carol is an easy way to step into the season. The production pairs naturally with an evening in Northport – a brisk walk down Main Street or through the nearby park, time spent browsing local shops that give the Village its holiday character, and a warming drink at the theater bar before showtime.
A Christmas Carol runs until December 28, with performances on Wednesdays at 7pm, Thursdays and Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 2pm and 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm and 7pm, with select weekday matinees during the holiday week. Tickets start at $86 and are available through the Engeman Theater box office at 250 Main Street in Northport Village, by phone or online.
