The Northport Historical Society and Museum yesterday honored Brueggemann Funeral Home with the Heritage Business Award, a prestigious offering presented to local businesses that have been in continuous operation for 50 years or more and have made lasting contributions to the community through service, dedication and a commitment to preserving the character and history of the area.
For over 65 years, Brueggemann Funeral Home has maintained a trusted presence in the East Northport community, supporting generations of families during their most difficult times. Their longstanding commitment to professionalism, care and community involvement exemplifies the spirit of the Heritage Business Award, reads a press release from the society.
Robert E. Brueggemann began his career working for Harry Taylor in 1946, after returning home from military service. In 1958, Taylor acquired property on Larkfield Road with plans to open a new funeral home but chose instead to sell it. Seizing the opportunity to establish his own business, Brueggemannt purchased the single-chapel facility, officially founding the Brueggemann Funeral Home in 1961.
Brueggemann anticipated the need for expansion and enlarged the funeral home twice, first in 1964 and again in 1974, to better serve local families in a growing East Northport community.
He retired in 1991, though he remained active in the profession and kept his funeral director’s license until his passing on June 27, 2003. Following his retirement, Brueggemann’s son Douglas, along with Paul F. Papa, assumed leadership of the business, renaming it the Brueggemann Funeral Home of East Northport.
“We are honored to recognize Brueggemann Funeral Home for their decades of service to our community,” said Terry Reid, executive director of the Northport Historical Society and Museum. “Businesses like theirs help define the history and heart of Northport and East Northport, and we are proud to celebrate their legacy.”
