Local news reports regarding Barnes & Noble closing its East Northport store are making the rounds, with discount grocer ALDI planning to move into the bookstore’s current location in the Huntington Square Shopping Center at 4000 Jericho Turnpike.

A relocation of the bookstore is in the works, according to officials.

“Unfortunately, our lease is up in this location and the landlord is redeveloping the site,” shared Janine Flanagan, senior director of store planning and design at Barnes & Noble. The company is in the process of securing a new location, she said, and hopes to be able to announce one soon. The East Northport store will be open and trading through at least January, she added.

Some community members have questioned the addition of a grocery store in such close proximity to the existing Stop & Shop, located in an adjacent parking lot also in the Huntington Square Shopping Center. ALDI advertises itself as a unique experience, however, with one guiding principle: “great quality should come with everyday low prices.”

The world’s first ALDI store was founded by the Albrecht family in Germany in 1961. In 1976, the chain opened an ALDI store in Iowa. Now headquartered in Batavia, Illinois, the ALDI chain has grown to more than 2,000 stores across 36 states with over 25,000 employees. There are currently 128 ALDI locations in New York, including stores in Lake Grove, North Babylon and Carle Place.

When contacted, a representative for ALDI told the Journal the company had no information to share regarding developments in East Northport at this time.
