You’re invited: Shipwreck’s Tim Hess to be honored with “Northport Icon Award” at special event

Village by: Joanne Kountourakis, August 6, 2022

A member's only event at Tim's Shipwreck Diner will acknowledge and honor owner Tim Hess with the Northport Icon Award. Click here to become a member in time for the August 13 event.

Next weekend, in conjunction with its “Iconic Northport” exhibit, the Northport Historical Society will host a member's only event at Tim's Shipwreck Diner to acknowledge and honor owner Tim Hess with the Northport Icon Award. Tim is the first recipient of the award, with other “icons,” including the Weber family, owners of Seymour’s Boatyard, to be recognized at more events throughout the months to come.

A yearlong exhibit – and the museum’s first ever interactive one – “Iconic Northport” features the history behind Northport's most well-known landmarks, businesses and traditions, including the LILCO stacks, the trolley tracks, Jones Drug Store and Cow Harbor Day.

With history dating back to the 1920s, when a trolley dining car was rolled onto its current landmark location on Main Street, the then-Northport Diner was bought by Tim’s father in the early 1970s. Tim took it over in 1996. The affable owner, who greets most customers by name, can be found in the diner – visible in the kitchen or checking on tables – on most visits.

This special members-only event, described as a casual evening of music, food and drinks, will take place at the diner on Saturday, August 13, at 7pm. Tickets are $60 per person and include a buffet and unlimited drinks. You can become a member of the Northport Historical Society and buy tickets here (or by calling 631-757-9859).

The Northport Historical Society is located at 215 Main Street, Northport; “Iconic Northport” runs through spring 2023.
