A fire erupted around 11pm on Saturday, December 3 at the Town of Huntington maintenance facility on Boxer Court in Huntington Station. Several residents called 911 with reports of flames and smoke coming from the area, and loud explosions were heard. This morning, Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth announced that six of 15 town garbage trucks were destroyed in the fire.

In a press statement, Supervisor Smyth wrote the following:

“I am relieved to report there are no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation however, it does not appear to be suspicious. The explosions many residents reported hearing came from the tires of the trucks as they burned. The Town is confident we can maintain regularly scheduled household garbage pick up routes. However, yard waste pick up will be suspended this week. We are all grateful for the swift and effective action from all of the firefighters who responded. The situation is evolving. We will get more information to the public as it becomes available.
